What is CMA?

The Institute of Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Sri Lanka was incorporated by Parliament Act No.23 of 2009 in April 2009 and is the National Professional Management Accounting Institution in Sri Lanka. It was set up in the year 2000 with Technical Assistance of CMA Canada. Since its inception, CMA has steadily progressed to an Institute comprising over 12000 students and 2000 Members. CMA promotes and develops the study of Management Accounting, Financial Accounting and conducts the Certified Management Accounting Programme leading to a Professional Management Accounting qualification.

After A/Ls why follow the CMA Study Programme?

Affordable cost. Eg. Initial student registration fee is only Rs.1900.00
The total duration of the course is only 2 ½ years
Practical training is not mandatory to complete the exams and could be taken either during or after completing of exams
The option exists to sit one or more subjects at examinations
Exemptions are granted from recongised national and international examinations, and universities
Career path to complete a Bachelor in Management Studies degree with exemptions from Open Universtiy of Sri Lanka while doing CMA exams
Ability to follow the first two stages of CMA in either Sinhala / Tamil / English
What is the minimum qualification to register for the CMA?

2 A/L passes with O/L passes in English and Maths.
What are the exemptions granted by other Professional Examinations for the CMA qualification?

ICASL, ACCA UK, Institute of Financial Accountants UK, CIMA UK , Certified General Accountants of Canada, CMA Ontario – Canada, CMA British Colombia – Canada, Deakin University Australia and CPA Australia

How can I obtain a degree with CMA at an affordable cost?

CMA students who have passed the Professional Stages can register for the 5th level of the Bachelor of Management Studies Degree. Therefore the 4 year degree programme can be completed in two years while studying for CMA.

Examinations

CMA examinations are conducted by the Deparment of Examinations of Sri Lanka. It will be conducted twice a year, during March and September.

Union says 90 per cent of academics have handed in their resignations

More than 90 per cent of those in university administration countrywide have tendered their resignation letters to the authorities resulting in administrative functions of universities on the verge of a breaking down, Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) said yesterday.

The FUTA said heads of departments, coordinators of units as well as hostel wardens and centre directors have tendered their resignation letters as part of the trade union action urging the government to give a substantial salary increase to university academics.

FUTA President Nirmal R. Dewasiri said by yesterday a majority of officials holding administrative positions in almost all the universities including Colombo, Moratuwa, Jaffna, Eastern, Ruhuna and Sri Jayewardenepura and the Nawala Open University had handed in their resignation letters.

“We have not received any favourable response from the authorities except for a circular from the University Grants Commission claiming that resignations should be given with three months notice. But it is a futile move as section 51 (III) of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 does not refer to the resignation process,” Dr. Dewasiri said.

He said university teachers have been asking the government for a pay hike since last year and added that academics in Sri Lanka had one of the lowest salary scales in South Asia.

Dr. Dewasiri said if the government failed to provide a reasonable solution to the issues faced by the academics they would refrain from attending to the 2011 A/L evaluation process as part of their trade union action.
